The grape season 2023-2024 started on a good note with favourable weather conditions resulting in high-quality grapes. However, the exporter’s journey became very challenging as unforeseen challenges came along the way.
Adverse Weather and Its Impact
Certain grape-growing regions suffered from unexpected rain during the flowering period of grape cultivation, and this occurred when grapevines were most susceptible. This season, black spots, also known as anthracnose issues, were very prevalent.
The issue of the Red Sea and the logistical obstacles
Geopolitical conditions around red sea have disrupted conventional routes of shipping thereby affecting the exportation process. Also, the costs related to logistics have increased, causing a major delay in shipments. The red-sea situation caused the scheduled 20-day transit time to Rotterdam to increase to 40 days. This delay had an adverse effect on the quality of fruits, raising concerns on their freshness and shelf life.
Preventive Steps
We responded to these difficulties by taking proactive steps to lessen the effects of longer journey times. We ensured procurement of only best fruits to keep quality of grapes intact across long distance journeys while availing post-harvest protocols.
Market Dynamics in Europe
The price of Indian grapes has gone down significantly due to excessive supply in the European market. As a result, exporters’ profit margins have been squeezed. In some cases, untimely arrival of vessels has made matters worse by creating inconsistencies in supply chains and exacerbating the market’s volatility. Despite such challenges, exporters remain committed to supplying quality products using flexible methods and proactive approaches.
